On the sixth day evening during the ongoing Navaratri Brahmotsavams, Sri Malayappa Swamy took a heavenly ride on mighty Gaja Vahanam. With beautiful caparisoned elephants leading the procession from the front, the golden elephant with the idol of the Lord atop, moved at a leisurely pace along the Mada Streets.
The elephant has greater significance in Indian mythology. Vishnu is said to have protected Gajaraja from the clutches of a crocodile, according to Bhagavatam story. The giant elephant Airavatha is the vehicle of Lord Indra. Dancers, folk artists and drummers join in the procession. Devotees will be anxious to witness the Darsanam of Lord Venkateswara on Gaja Vahanam.
